The Survival Guide

The Survival Guide

Private family court is not designed to explain itself to you. There is no orientation. No one hands you a roadmap. You are expected to comply with orders you may not fully understand, meet deadlines you may not know exist, and navigate a system that assumes you already know how it works.

The M.O.M. Survival Guide exists to close that gap. It is a plain-language, practical resource for families who are in the middle of the system right now and need to know what to do next.

What the Survival Guide Covers

Understanding Your Court Order

Court orders are legal documents written in legal language. The Survival Guide breaks down the most common provisions — custody schedules, visitation terms, child support amounts, modification triggers, and compliance requirements — into plain English so you know exactly what is expected of you.

Child Support: What You Need to Know

  • How child support amounts are calculated in Arkansas
  • What to do if you lose your job or your income changes
  • How to request a modification — and when courts will grant one
  • What OCSE can and cannot do on your behalf
  • How to document payments and protect yourself from false non-payment claims
  • What happens if you fall behind — and how to stop the spiral

Visitation: Protecting Your Time With Your Child

  • What to do when the other parent denies visitation
  • How to document missed or denied exchanges
  • What constitutes a violation of a visitation order
  • How to request enforcement through the court
  • How to handle exchanges safely when conflict is present

Court Hearings: How to Show Up Prepared

  • What to bring to every hearing
  • How to dress, speak, and conduct yourself in front of a judge
  • What judges are actually looking for when they assess a parent
  • How to request a continuance if you are not ready
  • What to do if you cannot afford an attorney

Compliance: Staying on the Right Side of the Order

  • How to track every deadline, payment, and program requirement
  • What to do if you miss a deadline — and how to document why
  • How to communicate with the other party in writing to protect yourself
  • What a contempt filing means and how to respond to one

When Things Go Wrong

  • What to do if you are served with a contempt motion
  • How to request an emergency hearing
  • What to do if you believe the other party is violating the order
  • How to find legal aid in Arkansas
  • When and how to contact M.O.M. for help
